Aci Castello: Where Myth Meets the Mediterranean

Aci Castello is a stunning corner of eastern Sicily where history, myth and the Mediterranean meet.
It is a place where the air smells of salt and citrus, making it the perfect retreat for anyone looking for an authentic holiday experience.

History: Built on lava and legends

The town's history is physically anchored in its namesake castle. Built in 1076 by the Normans, the fortress is constructed of dark, volcanic basalt. Volcanic foundations: The rock it sits on was formed by an underwater volcanic eruption around 500,000 years ago. The siege: Over the centuries, it changed hands between the Byzantines, the Arabs and the Normans.
In 1297, it was the site of a famous siege during the War of the Vespers. Legend: The name "Aci" comes from the myth of the shepherd Acis and the sea nymph Galatea. After Acis was killed by a jealous cyclops, his blood was turned into a river by the gods.

Description: A coastal postcard

Aci Castello is a charming coastal village just north of Catania. It functions as a picturesque resort town, where the dark volcanic rocks contrast sharply with the deep turquoise blue of the Ionian Sea.
A walk through the town feels like a true escape; the main square opens up like a massive balcony overlooking the waves, perfect for a sunset stroll.
Whether you're looking for a sunny afternoon by the water or a romantic evening, the atmosphere is pure dolce vita.

Nature and the Cyclopean Islands

The coastline here is part of a protected marine area. Isole Ciclopi: Just a short distance away in nearby Aci Trezza (easily accessible on foot), these massive basalt columns rise from the sea. Rocks of Polyphemus: Legend has it that these were the boulders that the blind Cyclops threw at Odysseus.
Lush flora: You'll find typical Mediterranean scrub, prickly pear cactus and vibrant bougainvillea clinging to the black rocks.

Festivals and traditions
